5 Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Child Care Center

YouthMUSE thanks our guest blogger Erika Schmidt:

“Have you ever envisioned your child in the future?

What would he be like or where would he be?

It is quite a challenge for every parent to establish that future. However, there always is a start for every success you wish your child to achieve, and it all starts in Child Care Centers.

That is to say, the first few years of your child’s learning is very important because this is where he learns the basic work ethics and it is where his talents and abilities are discovered. Therefore, it is important to know the factors to consider when choosing the right preschool for him.

1. Opening and closing time
The child care centre you choose should open early enough for you to drop off your child and still be at work on time. It is also best that the dismissal time of your child is right around your time off from work. If they don’t coincide with each other, better yet ensure someone you trust to pick him up for you.

2. Curriculum
When looking at the curriculum, every school has their own standard or structure of education. You may choose between an ‘academic’ or ‘developmental’ preschool. And you may look into the daily activities the school offers so you are aware of their styles of teaching.

3. Location
Another important factor to consider is the location of the school. Do you want a school that is just a few blocks away from your house? Do you want it to be closer to your office? These are some of the questions you will need to ask yourself when laying down the options.

4. Credentials and licenses
Choosing a child care centre for your little one is just as crucial as doing business because you are investing your trust on the establishment. This emphasises on the licenses and credentials the schools hold as proof that they are worthy of your trust. Knowing these facts gives you the confidence of enrolling your child in a particular school.

5. Ratio of staff to children
You might need the ratio of student to teacher to know how much attention your child is given. The ratio will be a big factor in the development of your child’s learning. Be sure to keep it on the list.

If you are having a hard time looking for the right school for your child, just make sure you go through each of these items carefully to ensure not just a choice, but the right choice.

  1. These are some good things to keep in mind when looking for a child care option. I definitely agree that looking at the ratio of staff to children is important. I wouldn’t want my sons to be lost in the crowd of children.

    • That is for sure! But a well organized group should be able to ensure the child feels included, part of the team and always acknowledged. It all about the Educators and staff who work with the child. Focus on their personalities even above and beyond the facilities themselves.

  2. I want to find the best place for my kids to go. It can be hard to find the right childcare facility though! However, you have some great tips here that I hadn’t thought of before, like looking at the curriculum. Which is better, the academic or the developmental method?

    • Depends on the age of the child. Developmental until they get to Middle School and then switch to Academic method. But even that is depends on the child and his/her needs and wants with their own education. Also depends on what your plans are for their future?

  3. I agree that when it comes to finding a good child care facility you need to account for the location. It makes sense that a place that is close to your house can help you save time and money when traveling. I would want to make sure I find a place that offers good programs to help my son grow and learn.
